1. ERC: Center for Intelligent Image Informatics—CI3
Lead Institution: University of California, Santa Barbara
Core Partner Universities: University of California, Berkeley, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA.
Outreach Institution: California State University, San Bernardino.
2. ERC: CI3 Vision and Goals
We propose to establish an ERC in image informatics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), that brings together researchers and industry partners from many disciplines, including remote sensing, molecular and cellular biology, marine sciences, brain imaging, nano-scale imaging, and security and homeland defense. At the core of the center activities is image information processing that covers a broad spectrum of research in imaging, including imaging at nanoscale, image processing, pattern recognition, computer vision, sensor networks and sensor fusion, and image/video databases. Imaging and image informatics are becoming ubiquitous. Yet, surprisingly, there are few integrated efforts that bring together researchers from different disciplines in promoting image informatics. The goal of the center is to advance image information processing technologies in a synergetic manner covering many scientific applications that are increasingly dependent on intelligent imaging and information processing tools.
Interdisciplinary research has been the hallmark of UCSB and this proposed ERC effort is based on existing strengths in the core technology areas and associated application thrusts in image informatics. In particular, faculty in signal and image processing, communications and networking, and databases, will work together with scientists in geography, remote sensing, biology, medical imaging, as well as researchers in security & surveillance and semiconductor manufacturing, in revolutionizing new image informatics technologies and related applications.
This ERC led by UCSB will be a multi-institution effort that includes UC Berkeley and Woods Hole Institute. California State University at San Bernardino will be our main outreach partner and we are exploring similar collaborations with local community colleges in Santa Barbara, Oxnard, and Ventura, and local K-12 schools.
Director: Prof. B. S. Manjunath, ECE Department.
Deputy Directors: Prof. Ken Rose, ECE, and Prof. Ambuj Singh, CS.
The ERC thrust areas are broadly grouped into core technology thrusts and application thrusts.
